About this event

  • 7 hours

The Community Healthcore Foundation, through the Timothy Stewart funds for Suicide Prevention and Awareness, invites you to become a Youth Mental Health First Aider.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge in youth and adolescents age 12-18.

Similar to physical First Aid and CPR, MHFA helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis until professional assistance is obtained or the crisis is resolved.

Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step Action Plan to recognize warning signs of a mental health or substance use challenge, provide help in crisis and non-crisis situations, and understand where to turn for additional assistance.

Frequently asked questions

What types of topics are covered?

Topics covered include depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychosis and substance use disorders. Trainees are taught how to apply the 5-step action plan in a variety of situations, such as a panic attack or suicidal ideation.

Do I need Mental Health First Aid?

Absolutely! Just like our physical health needs nourishment, so does our mental health. Our vision is for Mental Health First Aid to become as common as CPR and First Aid training.

Where did Mental Health First Aid start?

Mental Health First Aid was created in Australia in 2001 by Betty Kitchener, a nurse specializing in health education, and Tony Jorm, a respected mental health literacy professor.

Does this training qualify for CEUs?

Yes! Your certificate will indicate the amount of CEUs/CPEs in the bottom right-hand corner in which you will submit to your appropriate reporting board. Hours depend on Adult or Youth training attended.
